MUTEMATH – HOB Dallas

MUTEMATH is one of those bands that you must see before you die. They put on an amazing show and just go crazy the whole time. These photos are from their current Odd Soul tour in Dallas, Texas.

Photo Notes:

This was one of the harder shows I have shot. Insane light setup and strobes going nuts. Also pretty strong blue and red lights (which always make it pretty difficult). I also posted way too many photos, but thats okay… I shot this with the Nikon D700, the 24-70 f/2.8, and the 10.5mm 2.8 Fisheye.

Incubus – The Joint

Incubus was one of the first bands that made me obsessed with music. In high school, I would just sit in every class with my CD player and headphones (that wrapped around the back of my head cause that was cool) and blast Incubus and not pay attention to anything being taught. I really can’t believe this was my first time seeing them in concert and as I expected, they were amazing.

Incubus is one of the few bands that I will be proud to tell my kids came from my generation.

Shooting Notes:

The Joint in Las Vegas was pretty much the perfect venue to see Incubus. It was pretty small and GA so everyone was going nuts. The lighting was alright, but the first song and a half I could shoot it was just solid red florescent lights. Ew.

A few weird things were that I was told to shoot songs 4,5, and 6. A bit different then the normal 1,2, and 3. Also there was this random robotic camera at the foot of the stage that would wheel around and would show up in some of my shots. Kinda weird but it was all good.

All of these photos were edited on the road with my 13″ MacBook Air. A sad break from my 2 27″ screens but I think the photos came out pretty sweet.

Mute Math – The Troubadour

MUTEMATH is just simply amazing. They put on one of (if not the) best live shows ever. The have a new record coming out called Odd Soul and so far from what I have heard, it should be fantastic.

The Troubadour is one of the most challenging venus to take photos at. No pit, always sold out over capacity, and just crazy. This was definitely one of the most difficult concerts for me to take photos at, but there is still some sweet shots. But all in all, when you leave the concert with about 50% of your hearing, dripping in sweat, and being rubbed up on from dudes with no shirts on, it was a good show.

The Script – Club Nokia

I have been a long time fan of The Script. I got their album back in the day when it was only available in the UK. I took photos for them about a year ago in New York that they have a bunch of the shots featured on their website slide show (uncredited I might add ). They were amazing and you should check them out if they come your way.

Kanye West – Coachella 2011

You know a show is gonna be pretty sweet when the opening song Kanye West descends on the crowd from a crane. There was over 150 photographers in the pit, so it was a pretty rough shoot. None the less, it was a sweet show and a good time.

Interpol – Coachella 2011

I am a fan of Interpol and this was my first time seeing them live and I really enjoyed the show. They were on the main stage at Coachella and just at dusk so the lighting was just great.

Grizzly Bear – Coachella

Grizzly Bear was sweet. They blended in nice with the whole Coachella vibe. I really enjoyed shooting their set even though it was pretty difficult with lighting and everything. They were way into the vibey dark lights.

Shooting Notes:

Grizzly Bear’s set was basically pitch black. It was one of the most difficult shooting situations I have been in with lighting. And to make matters worse, I was limited on my CF Cards when I got to Coachella, so I had to shoot in JPEG, and when there is bad lighting, that is a no-no. Pretty much always a no-no, but yeah. Good times. I used my 24-70 f/2.8 on my D700 for the set.

Passion Pit – Coachella

Passion Pit opened my Coachella experience and I was not disappointed. The frontman, Michael Angelakos, was going crazy. He was just jumping around and it was pretty intense trying to keep up with him. It was a great show.

Shooting Notes:

This was the first show I shot at Coachella, and it was a good 40 other photographers in the pit with me, which was a new experience. I am used to 2-3 maybe, but 40 was a lot. It was a bit difficult moving around and trying to get different shots, but I think there is some sweet ones. I used the 24-70 f/2.8 for the set on my D700.

Corinne Bailey Rae – Coachella

Corinne Bailey Rae is a grammy winning fantastic artist. She plays one of my favorite styles, the smooth jazz/blues. She was an interesting pick for Coachella but I thought it balanced out well. It was a good time and there was a ton of people there to see her.

Shooting Notes:

The lighting was a harsh red the whole set. Luckely, Nikon knows how to make good cameras, so the combination of RAW + Lightroom, I was able to pull pretty good color out of it. I used my 24-70 f/2.8 and the 70-200 f/2.8 on my D700 for the set.
